With its venerable sandstone buildings, historic towers and the 11 unique fountains, Bern belongs to the most impressive examples of medieval towns in Europe. The town centre has remained practically unchanged over many centuries. For this reason Bern was honoured by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Thanks to this honour, the town with its much-visited bear pit - the bear is the town's heraldic animal - has moved into the ranks of Rome, the Egyptian Pyramids or the Taj Mahal. Furthermore Bern is the administrative capital of Switzerland.

Thanks to its arcades, Bern has one of the longest covered shopping promenades in Europe. Under the arcades, in the squares and in the streets dozens of bars and restaurants offer refreshment. Tuesday and Saturday morning fresh vegetables, flowers and local specialities can be found in colourful markets.

An endless park

Bern's green artery is called the Aare River and, in summer invites you for a swim. It meanders closely around the old-town and offers many recreation areas. A short walk from the train station and you're walking in the middle of the countryside along the river bank under trees.

Einstein developed his theory of relativity and Tobler the world-renowned Toblerone chocolate in Bern. The Casino and the Theatre are only a few paces apart. In addition, a lively scene of cabaret artists, modern dance performances and jazz concerts guarantee a rich cultural life on an international level.
